I enjoy being a geek sometimes... How I almost got a detention

Posted this as a comment in another journal. Decided to post it here.

This was the only time I was threatened with a detention in high school. The Study hall proctor was my calc teacher (a waaaay cool guy)

Someone asked him a remedial math problem (reducing fractions). I offered to help...

I explained that when given a problem like:

16
64

All you really need to do is cross of the 6s

16
64

And it reduces to 1/4

The teacher looked up at me and said, "You know, I could put you away in detention for the rest of the school year for that..."

He then flashed a wicked grin and I explained to the student that this was not how math usually worked.

If you didn't get this... *grin* Oh well ;)

what a "new" idea ;~>

I got into trouble with my 11th grade math teacher for doing Trachtenberg work -- all documented, just not the method he was hoping for...

So the gag is that it really DOES reduce to 1/4, but the math you used to get there is bogus?

Correct. Consider, for example, the fraction 15/52: That most certainly does NOT simplify to ½

Ooooo... you were such a rebel.
