Only in my geeky world...
I've added a new internal hard-drive to my workstation at home.

The old drive was getting pretty full and I'm pretty sure I need to blank it and run diagnostics on it.

The old drive has two partitions: Babalon and Beast. Babalon is the boot volume

The new drive has three partitions: Tardis, Doctor, and Rose. Tardis is the boot volume.

So I've put Leopard into the Tardis Drive. Much to the chagrin of the 5th incarnation.

I commented to [info]jnanacandra that I would now transition all the old files to the new OS.

I said... "The file transfer now begins. Everything from Babalon into the Tardis"

Only in my twisted, geeky, philosophical worlds would I actually try to put everything that comes from Babalon into the Tardis.

And somewhere an author in Boston has just sprayed coffee across the room.

A loved one...
...recently got a new computer at her office.

She remarked that it did not have a floppy drive.

This reminded me of a comic that is now almost 10 years old.

I think the comic stands for itself.

Hardware secrets revealed
From a post by [info]intralimina:

A japanese site (done in flash) that provides a microscope into your browser explaining exactly how the cursor really works. Make sure you drag thru and around the microscope circle, clicking and double clicking to see how the technology of your browser really works.

Um, another net app?!?
So, Google now has an online spreadsheet. To go along with its online word processor and its online mapping software.

Meanwhile, you can go to your online feed management system to post to your online blog.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am well connected. I have net coming out of my ears. We're talking Cell phone, WiFi, Gigabit endowed laptop. Ooh, baby.

But guess what. Every now and then, there isn't a signal. The mountain is too high, the farm to wide, the airport too expensive, or worse... the plane. And then what?

All my files are inaccessible or worse... The application itself is web based.

Until we can assure 24/7 access to the internet (planes, trains and automobiles)... Web based apps are still a nifty curiosity... and little else.

Just my $0.02

Since I am not currently emplyed full-time in my industry
In the past 12 months, I would say that I have filled out roughly 300 job applications in my field. None have yielded a position.

Looking at job positions today, I felt I should help the younger aspiring engineers by explaining the "HR speak" that they will find in job application requirements in our field.

I suppose I should add that this is satire and that I actually like working in our industry, but I may as well grab the lion by the tail and shake a bit anyways.

Comments are welcome on this including additions, corrections, and suggestionsWhy yes, I'm taking metrics on this post.

Now, I don't have a lot of spare cash... but I know a sure thing...
So, the sportsbook Bodog actually put up odds on today's mac announcements:

Here are the three odds I played today:
Video iPod: 6/5
Airport Express with Video: 4/1
Updated PowerMac/PowerBook: 2/1

Sadly, they've gone out of their way to kill cell phone coverage in the announcement hall. So updates are fairly non-existant.

More soon.

MacTel? A good idea?
Recently, on of all places a poker forum for mac users, the question was asked if this whole Mac on Intel thing is a good idea. So I responded:

Apple is now at a point where they can afford to jump on the Intel bandwagon. And it's not because of the chip or the speed. It's because they are positioned to fend off two possible problems with the move. 1) a drying up of hardware sales during the conversion. 2) MIcrosoft strong-arming Intel to make decisions that are not beneficial or even harmful to Apple.

Does the change really matter? The Apple OS is clearly superior to the Microsoft OS. And one doesn't have to be a pundit to see that. The OS will run just as well on Intel as it does on the IBM series.

The consumer on the other hand (relatively uneducated) will hear "Intel" and believe that now, Apple is playing in Microsoft's world so there's more reason to switch. The truth is that the applications will be little changed. Sure, any application that is trying to do cross microchip emulation will be great. This consists primarily of Virtual PC.

The most important issue will be lost. Apple has an OS that can run on any microchip. They can change that out almost as easily as they can swap out the video card. The real question becomes.... once this change occurs... what happens if Microsoft decides they can move to IBM's PPC series?

About this journal
This is my place. These are my words. Sometimes they are pearls of wisdom; other times they are droppings for the scarab to feast upon. Rarely are they personal. Read or don't; comment or don't.

"...Man has the right to write as he will..."

Let this be a forum with which I hopefully explore and come to understand my own True Will.
